Neurofeedback is a technique which permanently reduces the effects of many brain disorders and conditions without medication. The goal of neurofeedback is to retrain the brain. The primary objective of neurofeedback is to train the self-regulation of brain activity. The second objective is to train emotional regulation. The third is to train cognitive function.

Neurofeedback trains the brain to better self-regulate and take care of itself. When the brain is not functioning well, evidence often can be seen in an electroencephalogram, or EEG. By challenging the brain, much as the body is challenged during physical exercise, neurofeedback can help train your brain to function better. But unlike physical exercise, the brain will continue to use its new capabilities after neurofeedback training is completed.

Neurofeedback is a painless, non-invasive way to train the brain to replace abnormal brainwave patterns with healthy ones. Using EEG, the brainwaves, which are the electrical activities of the brain, can actually be viewed on a computer. The computer assists the brain in recognizing normal rhythmic patterns by producing audio and visual reinforcement when they occur. The brain makes the appropriate corrections because the brain and body want to be in a state of health and balance. This is the most stable state for the body and where the body returns whenever it is in the process of healing. When the brain learns to create new, healthy brain patterns the results continue unless another trauma, disease, or injury occurs. Once the brain’s normal rhythmic patterns have been restored, neurofeedback training is no longer necessary.

Neurofeedback is being used by heath care professionals internationally to treat conditions involving problems with attention, cognition, mood, and behavior. Abnormal brain patterns can affect any aspect of brain function. There are many brain-based problems of childhood which can be helped with neurofeedback such as problems during sleep and severely disruptive behaviors in children and teens. Learning disabilities and the autism spectrum, including Asperger’s Disorder, respond to neurofeedback. Many emotional and physical conditions in adolescents and adults are relieved by neurofeedback training. With older adults, neurofeedback can help maintain good brain function and enhance performance. Neurofeedback is an exciting treatment which has shown clinical efficacy with a variety of conditions.


When we conduct the initial evaluation and interview, we gather information about your symptoms, your health, and your family history. The EEG testing gives us an objective assessment of brain activity. The digital data is analyzed, comparing the values with normative database reference values. This information gives us a look at the electrical activity of your brain and tells us what areas of your brain could benefit from neurofeedback training. We will review the results with you and, if necessary, schedule training sessions for you. The information from the evaluation also allows us to track the changes in brain function during neurofeedback training.
